PostSubject: OPSEC question    Mon Jul 19, 2010 11:15 am

Does OPSEC only apply to individuals deployed or those being deployed? There are some pictures of Justin on fb in his uniform and I didn't know if these rules applied to people who are stateside? Thanks Smile

Justin has a lot from Iraq too but the one I am questioning is one where you can obviously see his name, branch and rank....

Hopefully someone will know...you can always Photoshop that out though if you need to or I could do it because I'm a Photoshop addict lol. My boyfriend's current FB pic though you can see his name and branch clearly and half of his rank patch...he could be breaking the rules though, I'll have to ask him when he calls today haha

Markeis would post pictures up frquently when he was deployed to iraq last june and didn't do anything "ospec" to protect him or his troops. it confuses me as well.. on FB i have a air force ablum that he sent me pictures and i have it pretty private on there.. just like a few people can see the pictures then blocked to everyone else!

Photos are not considered security issues. As long as it is not a photo of him where you can tell his location, you're fine. It's more a matter of if you're talking time sensative things, like "He's deploying soon" just make sure there aren't photos of him in uniform that can easily be viewed with the post (if that makes sense).

Also if you're concerned about photo security, you can go in to the FB privacy settings and make photos only visable to friends. And make sure his profile photo isn't of him in uniform. That way you can insure only people that know him can see those photos.

I would suggest having him change his profile picture. Even if his photo albums are kept private, a person can search him and see that photo. It's not hard to save the photo and blow it up so all that info is visible.

Never advertise specific information about a soldier. This would include not putting out information regarding the soldier's name, rank and unit. In photos, learn to black out the soldiers name tape and rank.

So says the many opsec websites, my husband and the many friends of military.

There are so many things that are OPSEC violations that people don't realize, its really good you asked.
